Did you know that karaoke is a Japanese invention? A businessman named Inoue Daisuke started making tapes of music for people who wanted to sing. He rented out the first karaoke machines in Kobe in 1971. Karaoke quickly became very popular in Japan and all over Asia, but it changed when it arrived in English-speaking countries. There are karaoke nights at bars. People go up on a small stage to sing, but the other people don't just listen to them. They sing along when they know the song. In Japan, karaoke is personal, but in the West it is for everyone.
